FSU Football: Could ‘Noles make the playoff with two losses?
By Kelvin Hunt
FEI ratings predict FSU football as one of the best teams in the nation.
FSU football will likely open the season ranked top three in preseason polls. Oddsmakers have the ‘Noles as one of the top teams to win the national championship, but they also have a fairly tough schedule in 2017.
We posted FEI ratings that were released a few days ago, and they predict FSU to finish the season with two losses.
FEI ratings give FSU football a three percent chance of going undefeated in the regular season, and it all begins with the opening game against Alabama.
The ‘Noles are around a touchdown underdog against the Tide, but if they can win that opening game that changes everything. The expectations would change tremendously for the remainder of the season.
If the ‘Noles lose to Alabama in the opener, FEI ratings give the ‘Noles a 21.5 percent chance to finish 11-1. The ‘Noles also have a 35.2 percent chance to finish 10-2 accroding to FEI ratings.
They also give the ‘Noles a 26.8 percent change for FSU to finish 9-3.
If the ‘Noles finish 9-3 they will not make the college football playoff, and if they finish 11-1 they more than likely make the playoff.
Could FSU make the four team playoff with two losses in 2017?
Let’s Discuss
The games FSU has the biggest chance of losing are Alabama, Clemson, NC State and I’ll throw Miami and Florida in there.
They play one of the toughest schedules in the nation with the hardest portion being early in the season.
A loss to Alabama doesn’t mean much unless they get blown out. Miami, NC State, Clemson and Florida are not going to go undefeated. All three of those schools are likely to start the season ranked in the top 25.
The biggest thing FSU needs to do is win the ACC conference title. The ACC has gotten a lot of respect the last couple of years, but a two loss conference champion has yet to make the college football playoff.
However, if another Power 5 conference has a two loss champion, maybe the ‘Noles would get the nod based on their strength of schedule and recent newfound respect for the ACC conference?
