No. 5 – Florida is keeping the Sunshine State from having the best three way rivalry in football

In 1987, the Gators and Hurricanes opened the season inside the Orange Bowl with Miami blowing out their rivals 31-4. It would be the last time for a decade and a  half that the two teams would play in the regular season.

In the 29 seasons since that game, the teams who actually played 12 times before FSU and Miami met in 1951 have played a total of six times – with four of those being in the regular season. The teams are not scheduled to meet again until the 2019 season, opening the year in Orlando for what may be the last game in a while.

Who is to blame? Why is FSU the only school with the stones to play both schools? The answer is clearly Florida. The Gators hid behind the expansion of the SEC schedule as the reason why they couldn’t play the Hurricanes – but could continue playing non-conference powers like Akron, New Mexico State, San Jose State and others.

Then, it was that they couldn’t do it while playing Georgia in Jacksonville since they would lose a game at home each year. Here’s the solution: stop playing the Bulldogs in what is clearly a home game since you are four times closer than they are.

FSU does their part each year playing both schools – maybe Florida should not schedule schools like UMass and play UM so the Sunshine State could have the best series in the country.
