No. 4 – The 1997 Sugar Bowl

FSU all time has played their two rivals in a bowl game a total of three times. While the Seminoles did lose to the Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl that followed the 2003 season, it was nothing to compare with what took place in the Louisiana Superdome years before.

Let us not forget for a moment that Florida should not have been in a position to win a national title in this game, much less actually play in the game at all. The Gators needed a loss by Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game just to get into the rematch with the Noles – and then, Ohio State upsetting Arizona State in the Rose Bowl the day before meant they would win it by beating the Seminoles.

FSU had already beaten their rivals in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown to end the regular season, so they shouldn’t have had to play Florida again. Yeah, I’m going to stick with that argument as the reason why things happen the way they did.

It was also the ninth straight season that FSU was the only school to play both rivals…which brings us to the final point.
