5 reasons FSU fans should hate Florida more than Miami
By Jason Parker
No. 1 – Florida’s refusal to play Florida State in athletics after the school became co-ed
In 1947, the Florida State College for Women admitted men for the first time in over four decades, when it had been Florida State College, and became the co-educational Florida State University (admitting men who had been attending the Tallahassee branch of the University of Florida).
Almost immediately, the new Seminoles fielded teams in all the major sports – including football, men’s basketball and baseball. Despite being less than two hours away, the snobs at UF wanted no part of playing the new school – not playing FSU in football until being threatened with a bill in the state legislature that would make it law.
You know who would play the Noles? The folks down in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes played the Seminoles five times before the Gators would agree to the first meeting. The same was true for men’s basketball and baseball – it was Miami that showed respect to the FSU athletics program and agreed to the meetings.
The arrogance has continued for years as the Gators feel they were doing the Seminoles a “favor” by playing them…which brings us to the next point.
