FSU football had an up and down season in 2016 with the defense – here are the top five questions on that side of the ball heading into 2017.

To say that it was a tale of two seasons for the FSU football defense in 2016 would be one of the biggest understatements in the history of the program. It was a unit that allowed over 34 points in five of their first eight games while losing three games and their star safety, Derwin James, to a season ending knee injury just seven quarters into the season.

Over the last five games, however, the Seminoles found new life from that side of the ball and finished the year on that five game winning streak along with several new found superstars – names like Brian Burns and Tarvarus McFadden joined other stars like Derrick Nnadi, Josh Sweat and Nate Andrews for a unit that might just have saved the job of coordinator Charles Kelly with the end of season play.

Entering the 2017 season, several big questions remain on the defensive side – including what the return of maybe the best all around player in college football could mean for the unit. Here’s a look at the top five questions for the defense of FSU football to answer entering the 2017 season in less than two months.
