Success on First Down

The FSU offense has to improve on first down in order to take pressure off Deondre Francois and the offensive line. Here’s what the offense looked like on first down in 2016.

The ‘Noles did a great job of running the ball on first down with Dalvin Cook, averaging 5.26 yards per carry on the season. However, the problem came when teams stacked the box against the run and forced Deondre Francois to pass.

Francois only completed 59.2 percent of his passes on first down in 2016. That needs to increase considerably in 2016 if FSU football wants to improve.

FSU football threw the ball the most on first down as 41 percent of all passes were on in that situation. Only completed 59 percent meant FSU faced a lot of second and 10 situations.

FSU quarterbacks completed 63.5 percent of their passes on second down, and 54.8 percent of their passes on third and 10+.

See how important completing passes on first down becomes?
