FSU Baseball Recap: Noles Eliminated From CWS After Loss to LSU
By Ty Ragans
FSU baseball’s season came to an end on Wednesday night when the Noles lost to LSU for the second time in the 2017 College World Series.
FSU baseball had a great run but it came to an end on Wednesday night when the Noles lost to LSU 7-4 in a College World Series elimination game. The Noles went 1-2 in Omaha with both losses to LSU and the lone win over Cal State Fullerton.
The Noles started this wild ride with the final regular season series against Louisville and road the wave until they were one of the final six teams left standing. This team fell short of their ultimate goal but they still have a lot to be happy about. They turned it around, got out to Omaha and gave themselves a chance. FSU finished the season with a 46-23 record, at one point the Noles were 21-15.
Recap
FSU started Cole Sands in their rematch with LSU and he cruised through a 1-2-3 first inning. The second inning was the complete opposite. LSU put up a five spot and chased Sands before he could record the 2nd out of the 2nd inning. The big blow came on a three run homer from the LSU 9 hole hitter, Slaughter, it was his first home run since St. Patrick’s Day. FSU answered in the bottom of the inning when Drew Mendoza blasted his 10th homer of the season to left field to make it 5-1.
Andrew Karp replaced Cole Sands and he did a terrific job of keeping FSU in the ball game. Karp’s final line was 5.1 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 K’s.

It seemed like FSU baseball had something going in the 5th when Mendoza and Henderson lead off with back to back singles. But Steven Wells grounded into a 5-4 double play, the runner was actually safe but for some reason they only do replay at the plate. Tyler Holton flew out to the warning track to finish the inning.
The Noles threatened again in the 6th when Busby reached on an error and Jackson Lueck followed that with a double. With two men on Quincy Nieporte drove a fly ball just short of a home run for a sac fly to make it 5-2.
LSU would tack on two insurance runs in the top of the 9th to stretch the lead to 7-2. The Noles fought hard down to their last three outs. Quincy Nieporte and Cal Raleigh absolutely crushed back to back homers to left field to make the score 7-4. FSU would get another runner on base but eventually LSU closer Zack Hess struck out the side to close the game for LSU.
The leading hitter for FSU baseball was Drew Mendoza who was 2-4 with a solo homer. Nieporte was 1-2 with a homer a walk and two RBI. Cal Raleigh had a solo homer of his own, Jackson Lueck recorded a double and Dylan Busby was 1-4 with a run scored.
The Noles failed to meet expectations for much of the year but they finished very strong. They fell short of their ultimate goal but I’ll remember this team fondly. Hopefully the Noles can get back out to Omaha and give themselves another shot next year.
