FSU baseball swept Sam Houston State University in the Tallahassee super regional, earning themselves a berth in the College World Series.

In two very different games, FSU baseball was able to complete the sweep of the Sam Houston State Bearkats. The super regional victory earned FSU a spot in the College World Series. The first game saw FSU commit egregious errors early, but the Noles clawed back to a 7-6 walk off win. Sunday’s game was completely different as the Noles set the tone with a leadoff home run and never looked back on their way to a 19-0 thumping of SHSU.

The College World Series appearance will be the 22nd time FSU has been to Omaha. The trip will be Mike Martin’s 19th as a head coach. This will be the first time the Noles have advanced to the CWS since 2012. The two wins improved FSU’s season record to 45-21. Now the Noles will look to obtain that elusive first national championship.

Game One

Things did not start as planned for FSU baseball in the first game of the super regional. With ace Tyler Holton on the mound, FSU felt good about their prospects of winning game one. Holton didn’t have his best stuff and committed a couple errors of his own allowing Sam Houston State to take a 3-0 lead in the 1st. The SHSU strategy of applying pressure with bunts and aggressive base running was working to perfection.

SHSU tacked on a run in the 2nd but FSU would answer with a Steven Wells RBI single. The teams again traded runs in the third with FSU’s coming on a Jackson Lueck single to make it 5-2. Unfortunately after the RBI single Quincy Nieporte would ground into a 5-4-3 triple play, it was some serious misfortune.

More from FSU Baseball

Tyler Holton bared down to keep FSU in the game and exited after walking in a run in the 7th to make the score 6-3. In the bottom of the 7th, SHSU got two quick outs but Taylor Walls then laid down a bunt for a base hit and Busby walked. With runners on 1st and 2nd and two outs, FSU hit three straight singles to tie the game at 6-6.

FSU held SHSU in check to give themselves a chance to win the game in the 9th. Walls led off the inning with a single, then Busby was hit by a pitch, that’s when Jackson Lueck roped his fourth hit of the day for fourth RBI and a Seminole win.

Holton had a line of 6.2 IP, 6 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K’s. Drew Carlton pitched 1.1 innings of one hit ball to get the win. The hero was Jackson Lueck who was 4-5 with 4 RBI. Taylor Walls was 2-3 with two runs scored.

Game Two

Well Sunday was a long day for FSU baseball fans. A game that was supposed to start at 12:00 PM began at 7:30. It was well worth the wait though. FSU was the away team in game two and Taylor Walls immediately set the tone with a lead off opposite field homer against SHSU ace, Heath Donica.

FSU would score three more runs in the 1st to give Drew Parrish a 4-0 cushion. The death blow came early for SHSU as Quincy Nieporte launced a three run homer in the 2nd inning to make it 8-0.

In the next frame, Taylor Walls switched over to the right side and smoked another home run to continue his stellar weekend. From there the wheels came completely off for Sam Houston state. FSU would walk and single their way to putting up a big number on the night with SHSU committing plenty of errors to help them out.

Drew Parrish was pulled after five innings to keep him fresh for Omaha and get Cole Sands some work. Parrish kept up his streak of great performances with a line of 5IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K’s.

In the end FSU would cruise to a 19-0 victory and a trip to the College World Series. Taylor Walls was the leading hitter for FSU going 3-3 with two homers, four walks, four RBI, and five runs on the night. Kyle Cavanuagh got his first career homer with an absolute monster shot in a pinch hit appearance.
