Penalties

FSU football was one of the most penalized teams in college football last season. In fact, a penalty against UNC gave the Tarheels the opportunity to kick the 54 yard field goal as time expired in one of FSU’s three losses.

The ‘Noles committed 100 penalties in 2016, the most since 2011 when they had 103 penalties.

It’s no surprise that 34 of those 100 penalties came in the three losses.

FSU had eight penalties against Louisville, 13 against UNC and 13 against Clemson. Of course, one of those against Clemson wasn’t really a penalty.

The penalty yardage equated to an astounding 315 yards. That’s a 9.2 yard per penalty average.

The only game the ‘Noles were heavily penalized and managed to overcome those problems was the Ole Miss game.

The FSU defense capitalizing on four turnovers from Ole Miss was the saving grace. This is an area FSU has to clean up as they were ranked No. 124 in the country.
