FSU Basketball Selected to First NCAA Tournament Appearance in 5 Years
By Jason Parker
FSU basketball will be doing something they haven’t since 2012 – taking part in March Madness after being selected Sunday for the 68 team field.
It was just 1,830 days ago that FSU basketball last took the court for a NCAA tournament game, when as a No. 3 seed they were upset in the third round of the 2012 tournament by No. 6 seed Cincinnati. Now, the Seminoles will get a chance to avenge that lost and possibly make the deepest run the team has had in nearly a quarter century.
Sunday, the ‘Noles saw their tournament drought go out the door when they were selected as one of the teams for the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Head coach Leonard Hamilton’s team will be the No. 3 seed in the West Region, starting off their road to a title this coming Thursday:
Florida State Seminoles Basketball
It already has been a history making season for FSU basketball, who equalled the school record for most regular season wins (24) while, at 25-8 following their ACC Tournament semifinal lost to Notre Dame, are guaranteed to not have double digit losses for the first time in almost three decades (since going 22-8 in 1988-89, losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that year).
This year’s Seminoles team has been carried by three players with NBA caliber futures – Dwayne Bacon, Jonathan Isaac and Xavier Rathan-Mayes. The ‘Noles also sport on of the deepest benches in all of college basketball, a reasons why some think Florida State can make a deep tournament run.
FSU basketball’s history with Florida Gulf Coast is minimal, having played just once in the 2014 NIT, a 58-53 for the ‘Noles. If the Seminoles advance, they would take on either Maryland or Xavier on Saturday.
