FSU Football: Projecting Impact Freshman in Latest Recruiting Class
By Frank Urbina
Not likely to make an early impact, and probably headed for a redshirt
It’s always hard to speculate which players will redshirt for Florida State. Fisher usually finds playing time for the vast majority of his guys.
There are a few strong candidates though.
We start off with quarterback James Blackman. Blackman was a high three-star recruit from Glades Central High School. He has an absolute cannon for an arm, with decent mobility to boot. However, because of his size and the position he plays, it’s all but certain he redshirts next season. Blackman is 6-foot-5 but weighs less than 170 pounds. He needs time to develop.

As a quick aside, I do not think the other quarterback Fisher signed — Bailey Hockman — will meet the same fate. He enrolled early, meaning he has time to pick up the offense. His head coach in high school was his father, his quarterbacks coach, his grandfather. That helps. After what we’ve seen out of JJ Consentino (nothing but horrors), it’s safe to say the backup QB job is there for Hockman to take it.
There’s also Brady Scott to consider. Scott was a baseball prospect before he had a growth spurt that pushed him to play football. Offensive line coach Rich Trickett mentioned yesterday that Scott is going to start his career at center. Considering the classes of interior lineman that FSU has signed recently, it will be extremely difficult for Scott to jump ahead of the guys who got here before him.
Finally, tight end Tre’ McKitty is another player who I think is most likely going to redshirt. He’s 6-foot-5, 235 pounds, and can run a 4.5. McKitty has freakish potential. But there’s just so many tight ends ahead of him on the roster. A year to get stronger and learn the offense will do him wonders in the future.
