Conference Alignement and Rivalries

Since football is the sport that gets the most attention and brings in the most money to the Florida Sun Conference, the two divisions will be broken down mostly with that sport in mind. Since there are currently 11 Division I football programs in the state, we are inviting West Florida to join as they are a public university and will field a team starting in 2016 in Division II.

Next, we will add the two Division I programs that don’t have football programs (North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast). The divisions will be broken up geographically with seven teams in each (six for football) with one slight change we will explain later. Here’s a look at how they worked out:

FSC North Division (The I-10 and I-75 Group)

Florida Gators

Florida A&M Rattlers

Florida State Seminoles

Jacksonville Dolphins

North Florida Ospreys

South Florida Bulls

West Florida Argonauts

FSC South Division (The I-95 and Turnpike Group)

Bethune-Cookman Wildcats

Central Florida Knights

Florida Atlantic Owls

Florida Gulf Coast Eagles

Florida International Panthers

Miami Hurricanes

Stetson Hatters

While Bethune-Cookman is further north than South Florida, the Bulls were moved into the North Division in an effort to make the two groups more competitive (thus having three current FCS teams in one and four in the other).

Now, what will this mean for the college sports? I’m glad you asked…
