FSU Sports: Olympic Sports Week In Review
By Jason Parker
Let’s take a look at how FSU’s Olympic sports teams did this past week.
While much of the attention is paid to the major FSU sports, including football, basketball and baseball, there is plenty of other athletic competition going on right now on the Tallahassee campus and across the country involving the ‘Noles. Here’s a recap of how some of the Olympic sports fared this past week.
Softball
The Lady ‘Noles returned home this weekend for a three game series with the Syracuse Orange in their ACC opener. When the weekend was over, the ‘Noles kept their winning streak intact and extended it to 18 games with a sweep of the Orange. It’s a short stay at home for the Lady ‘Noles, as they head on the road for conference series with North Carolina and Notre Dame with a mid-week game at UCF next week as well.
Beach Volleyball
The second ranked Lady ‘Noles kept their record spotless for the 2016 season, taking all three games this weekend in Fort Worth, Texas. FSU didn’t give up a single match as they won 5-0 against Houston Baptist, TCU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Seminoles will return to the Sunshine State this weekend, stopping in DeLand to take on FIU, UCLA, FAU and Hawai’i.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
Both squads were down in Tampa for the annual Bulls Invitational hosted by USF. This weekend, it’s time for the Seminoles to host teams from across the country in the annual FSU Relays on campus at Mike Long Track this Friday and Saturday.
Men’s Tennis
After a historical win the weekend before over the then top ranked team in the country, the 23rd ranked ‘Noles opened this weekend with a win over ACC foe Virginia Tech. On Sunday, FSU was brought back to earth when they got shutout by the new top ranked team, Virginia. The Seminoles return home this week for a Thursday match against Georgia Tech and a weekend contest against Wake Forest.
Women’s Tennis
ACC play has not been kind to the Lady ‘Noles this season, as the squad dropped two more conference matches this weekend, losing 4-1 to Georgia Tech and a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Virginia Tech. FSU will look to get their first victory in the conference this season when they host Boston College on Friday and Virginia on Saturday. In their last 10 matches, FSU has won just three times, defeating Wofford, Navy and FAMU.
Men’s Golf
The ‘Noles were off this weekend while they traveled south in the state of Florida for this week’s Valspar Collegiate Invitational. FSU joins USF as the two teams from the Sunshine State in the tournament, where they will compete with other powers like LSU, Oklahoma State and UCLA.
Women’s Golf
The Lady ‘Noles were also off this weekend for a very good reason. They were traveling to South Carolina, where they will take part in the Briar’s Creek Invitational. It will be a tough field for 20th ranked FSU, who will compete against schools like Florida, Kent State, Michigan State and South Carolina.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving
The Lady ‘Noles ended their 2015-16 season at the NCAA Championships, being hosted by ACC conference foe Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The men’s team will head to Atlanta this weekend for their championship event.
