Receivers Dropping Passes

Jameis Winston was credited for another first-half interception yesterday, but once again it wasn’t on Winston.

As has been written in this space before, FSU just isn’t getting the same bounces this season. A lot of Winston’s interceptions have been on passes that were caught or just went incomplete last season. There’s really no regression on the part of Winston– if anything he’s improved at taking what’s underneath. The regression has been from Winston’s receivers.

Yesterday was a particularly difficult day for the group. Granted, conditions were less than ideal, but on the afternoon just three different receivers had receptions and the majority of that was Rashad Greene. All in all there were four drops and a handful of other miscues.

Ermon Lane had a big drop late in the game. Jesus Wilson probably cost FSU points with his drop in the first half. Even Greene — who is now FSU’s all time leader in receiving yardage — dropped a touchdown pass.

And then there was the interception– after which, Winston was visibly angry.

“It’s a lot of things that happened with that play, and I did get upset,” said Winston. “But you’ve got to move on. You can’t focus on the past.”

Moving forward though, FSU’s receiving corps needs to a better job of supporting its QB. Winston is the kind of guy a receiver should dream of playing for. He’s got a good arm. He’s not afraid to throw it if he thinks you’re open. He’ll stand in and take a shot to get the ball off. But these receivers have to do a better job for Winston.

He’s only going to be as good as they are.
