At 6-7, 220, Lorenzo Featherston has a rare combination of strength, speed and agility. He may be a true freshman, but there’s a reason Jimbo Fisher and company were so high on Featherston when he got to FSU.
Featherston was credited with a start yesterday though, in truth, he was really only part of FSU’s nickel package– and that’s what was on the field for most of the afternoon.
“The edge is we get in that four down and we’re rushing these guys,” said Fisher. “We allow him to play nickel and dime [packages] and be the guy that started out there on the edge — plus [Chris] Casher had a banged up shoulder during the week — but Featherston earned the right to be in that rotation and get out there because he can create so many things and create a lot of plays.
“I’m pretty pleased with where he’s at. As a freshmen to get the number of reps he has by his fifth game and where he’s developing to — and we’ll watch the film and reevaluate where he’s at — but I’m pleased with his progress.”
Featherston only played three quarters — he left the game after being banged up at the end of the third — but he still finished second on the team with seven tackles, 2.5 TFL’s and a fumble recovered. This comes a week after he picked up a sack and forced a key fumble against NC State.
The ACC — and the rest of the country — better get used to this guy. He’s only going to get stronger and more experienced. And he’s here for at least another two and a half years.
