Matthew Thomas almost didn’t make it to Tallahassee. After signing his national letter of intent, Thomas asked Florida State for a release from his LOI, a move FSU wasn’t inclined to make. It wasn’t until Jimbo Fisher made another trip to south Florida to reassure the five-star LB that things were finally smoothed out. Thomas arrived on campus on time and actually played in four games last season — recording 4 tackles, 2 TFL and a sack — before an injury forced him to take a redshirt and miss the remainder of the season.
This year, Thomas is healthy and has added some bulk to his frame. At 6-3 and about 230 pounds, Thomas has the size and the athleticism to become one of the next great FSU linebackers. He is listed behind Terrance Smith at weakside linebacker on FSU’s depth chart, but his ability to rush off the edge or drop into coverage should help Thomas get on the field in a number of different situations. Keep in mind, FSU’s defense does not employ a traditional scheme. The 4-3 depth chart is of limited value considering the number of packages and looks Charles Kelly’s defense will show this upcoming season. And a talented player like Thomas should have no problem findings ways to make an impact.
