Florida State has put the college football world on notice to start the season. The Seminoles are currently 2-0 with wins over No. 8 Alabama and FCS East Texas A&M. After dominating the Crimson Tide, the Seminoles tied the program record for their largest win margin with 74 points before entering a bye week in week three.

They will host the Kent State Golden Flashes in Doak Campbell Stadium this weekend. With Florida State's hot start, here are two reasons why the Seminoles have exceeded preseason expectations thus far.

1. Thomas Castellanos has become a Heisman trophy candidate

Tommy Castellanos has been nothing short of spectacular to start the season. The Boston College transfer has tallied 474 total yards, 4 touchdowns, and zero turnovers through six quarters this season. While his stats aren't as eye-popping relative to the rest of the nation, the dual-threat quarterback has been extremely sufficient, posting a completion percentage of 68% with an average of 15.6 yards per completion. Castellanos' early-season play has generated Heisman Trophy considerations. He comes in at No. 2 in this week's Heisman Poll presented by On3 Sports, and will have many more opportunities to justify his ranking.

2. Elite Coordinator Hires

Following the rehaul of the 2024 Florida State coaching staff, Mike Norvell, alongside athletic director Michael Alford, had their picks on who would fulfill the offensive and defensive coordinator positions. Luckily for Florida State fans, they did not falter during the selection process. Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has transformed the Florida State offense. The Seminoles are averaging 54 points and 555 yards per game this season. Malzahn's attack has allowed Florida State to lean on its athleticism in the run-pass-option game while also creating opportunities for vertical deep shots, contributing to their high scoring output. Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Tony White has also announced his presence in his short tenure in Tallahassee. The Florida State defense has held opponents to a mere 10 points a game and a solid 11 for 35 on third-and fourth-downs. The two coordinator additions have played a crucial part in Florida State's early-season success and look to aid the Seminoles' College Football Playoff hopes.
