FSU Football: Website predicts next head coach of Noles after Jimbo

FSU football is very happy with Jimbo Fisher and wants him to stick around for a long while – but one site is throwing out a name should that all change.

For nearly three and a half decades, FSU football was comfortable in the knowledge that it had the same man – the legendary Bobby Bowden – leading the Seminoles on the field each season. For the last seven seasons, that job has been done by Jimbo Fisher and he has made it very clear that he wants to stay in Tallahassee for as long as possible.

That hasn’t stopped other schools from coming after him and making things uncomfortable for a while. For the last two seasons, it’s been the worst kept secret that LSU wanted to bring Fisher back to the place he once was the offensive coordinator – while rumors swirl about NFL teams possibly wanting a piece of Fisher as well.

While we would love to have another three decades of leadership brining home titles to the FSU football family, the likelihood of Jimbo staying for another 27 seasons is probably very small. One sports website, The Spun, recently posted a list of who they thought would take over for some of the top programs if their coaches left.

For the Seminoles? They think the former coach of another state school who just left for a Power Five program is the man:

"Next head coach: Willie Taggart (Oregon head coach)…He’s shown the ability to succeed all over, with a stint under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford and many years as an assistant and head coach at Western Kentucky. As his recruiting shows, even at Oregon, he is a Florida guy, though. The Sunshine State is where he is most comfortable pulling talent from, and while Oregon has crazy resources, the chance to take over a program like Florida State might be enough to pry him away."

Now, I will present this one caveat when it comes to Taggert: IF he is able to be as successful at a power school as he was at South Florida, I would be more than willing to listen to him someday becoming the head coach of the Seminoles if Jimbo should no longer be the man in charge.

I know many people don’t want to think about it and I don’t want it to sound like we are pushing Jimbo Fisher out the door at FSU football. The sad reality in the current state of college sports is that nothing is forever. Fisher could decide one day that if, for example, an NFL team throws the right amount of zeros on his contract and gives him enough power, it would be time to move on.

It would stink for FSU football, but that’s business. The days of long term coaches committed to a school are gone, for the most part. You always have to have a backup plan. Taggert, a Florida native who knows what it takes to win in the Sunshine State, would be someone that could fit right in if the worst happens.
