Rashad Greene is one of the best wide receivers in FSU history, but that may not mean much to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Have they given up on him?

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Dede Westbrook in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and that could mean the end is near for Rashad Greene in Jacksonville if

Greene has played the last two years with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He played slot receiver and returned punts, having his biggest impact on special teams his rookie season. Greene averaged 16.7 yards per punt return and returned one for a touchdown.

He would have led the league in punt return average, but didn’t qualify for the minimum number of attempts. As a receiver, Greene had 19 receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns in nine games.

However, Greene’s production fell off a cliff in 2016 as he battled an achilles injury that ultimately cost him the season. He only had five receptions for 32 yards in eight games, and averaged just 6.2 yards per punt return on the season.

Jacksonville Jaguar GM Dave Caldwell told ESPN he isn’t ready to give up on Greene even though they drafted Westbrook:

"“I still have high hopes for [Greene],” Caldwell said. “They will play similar type of positions, but we have room to keep both of those guys.”“I think that [the Achilles injury] really set him back,” Caldwell said. “I don’t think he ever caught his stride. With a player sometimes you have those issues and you have that adversity, and I think he learned how to deal with that. He has had a great offseason. I saw him in the hallway the other day. He is getting a lot of muscle mass. He has really worked hard in correcting those biomechanical issues that he has had that causes injuries.”"

Thoughts

It’s crazy to think one of the best wide receivers in FSU history hasn’t been more productive. Then again, he has Blake Bortles has his quarterback while not being able to stay healthy.

That was the knock on Greene coming out of FSU, his slight build was a concern even though he was a workhorse at FSU for four years. His propensity to fumble punts (4) was a huge concern last season as well.

It’s probably a make or break camp and preseason for Greene. He needs to show he can stay healthy and make an impact when given the opportunity. He’s a great kid who’s impossible to not root for if you’re a FSU fan.

Here’s to hoping he can find the magic he had while at FSU and keep his spot on the Jacksonville Jaguar roster.
