FSU football will host a NIU Huskies team they played once before in the 2012 Orange Bowl, according to a report Friday citing information from one school.

It was four years ago when FSU football returned to the Orange Bowl game for the first time in nearly a decade – taking on a Northern Illinois team that was one of the few non-power conference teams to make a BCS bowl game during that era. It wasn’t much of a memorable game, as the Seminoles pulled away late to get a 31-10 win over the Huskies.

It appears that the men from Dekalb, IL will get a chance to try and get some revenge on the ‘Noles in the coming years. The website FBSchedules.com is reporting that the Seminoles will host the Huskies during the 2018 season in Tallahassee:

"Florida State will host Northern Illinois at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Sept. 22, 2018. The Huskies will receive a $1.6 million guarantee for the game, according to a copy of the contract obtained by NIU via an FOIA request."

This game will give FSU football three scheduled non-conference games, along with a trip to Notre Dame on November 10th and the regular season finale against Florida two weeks later at home. Under the current scheduling format of head coach Jimbo Fisher, the fourth out of conference game will likely be early in the season against a FCS foe.

If the ‘Noles don’t open the season against a lower level team, this opens up the door for Florida State opening the 2018 season against an ACC foe. With a conference schedule that season including home games against Clemson and Virginia Tech along with road trips to Louisville and Miami, you can easily see the conference scheduling any of those games to kick things off.

FSU football now has most of their non-conference schedule figured out for the rest of this decade. Along with the yearly game against Florida, the Seminoles will face Alabama, Louisiana Monroe and Delaware State this season along with a 2019 slate including Boise State and Louisiana-Monroe and a 2020 schedule of West Virginia and the second game against the Broncos.
