FSU football coach Jimbo Fisher is wanted by LSU brass. So we ask a LSU football expert to weigh in on the possibility of Jimbo Fisher going to LSU.

The FanSided Network has a host of sites that cover a lot of teams. We’re lucky enough to have LSU expert Jacob Young to answer questions regarding Jimbo Fisher potentially going to coach at LSU.

Chop Chat: What are you hearing regarding the possibility of Jimbo Fisher becoming the next head coach at LSU?

Death Valley Voice: As of right now, it doesn’t seem to me that there’s any chance of that becoming a reality. I know he’s probably the first choice for much of the fans, and the brass at LSU are borderline obsessed with him, but looking at it objectively I just don’t find it to be plausible. He’s winning at FSU, and while the job in Baton Rouge might be a step up, it’s not enough of one to justify the move for him.

Chop ChatJimbo was a hot commodity last season when Les Miles was on the hot seat. Is Jimbo a coach that LSU fans ultimately believe in? If you asked 10 LSU fans who would be their #1 target, how many of them would say Jimbo Fisher and why?

Death Valley Voice: As a general rule, I think that if you asked the fans who their first choice would be, they would say Ed Orgeron without any hesitation. He’s winning and is a guy that the people of state can relate to. But, when it comes to a potential outside hire, there’s no question that Jimbo is most people’s first choice. He coached here early in his career, and fans believe he could do a lot to bolster an offense that has struggled for a long time.

Chop ChatWhat if any would you consider the major differences between the LSU and FSU programs. Which job would you consider to be better and why?

Death Valley Voice: Both are certainly top-notch jobs in college football, but I think I’d give a slight edge to LSU. The SEC may not have a ton of teams at the top of the rankings, but a lot of that has to do with just how deep and talented the conference is. It’s a grueling season, and you’re going to play a top 25-quality opponent every week. It’s the best conference in college football, and when you’re running one of the top programs like LSU, your recruiting base is almost limitless. At FSU, Fisher is competing with Florida and Miami in the state along. Here, he’d have almost free run of the state, and could really only contend with Nick Saban across the South East.

Chop Chat: It sounds like it’s Jimbo Fisher, Ed Orgeron and Larry Fedora…and maybe Tom Herman when it comes to potential hires for the LSU job. Who would be your #1 choice among those coaches and why.

Death Valley Voice: Personally, I would like to see Orgeron land the job. I like the guy, the players love him, and it’s nice to finally have a head coach who’s willing to adjust his approach if it doesn’t work. My interest in Tom Herman has faded significantly as Houston’s season flamed out, and if Fedora is the best we can get, I’ve severely overrated this program. If the team opts to not go with Coach O, it has to be for someone like Jimbo Fisher.

Chop ChatWhoever the new coach is at LSU. What are some of the things that coach will need to do to build on the success that Les Mile had while coaching there?

Death Valley Voice: Our next head coach absolutely cannot be as stubborn as Miles was. He refused to change his approach on the offensive side of the ball for years, and it hurt the program greatly. The next guy has to put more focus on developing talent on offense, and LSU’s quarterback play has got to improve. The Tigers get fantastic recruiting classes every year, and the team is always one of the most talented in the nation. To take that next step, we need a competent offense. I think the decision makers at LSU realize that, and hopefully they can get it turned around soon.
