Would Florida State be interested in New Mexico QB Devon Dampier?
Florida State's football had an abysmal 2024 campaign where the Seminoles were expecting to win the conference and make the College Football Playoff. However, that idea was shut down after the second game of the season when they were defeated by the Boston College Eagles.
Speaking of the Eagles, the Seminoles were in discussions with former transfer portal quarterback Thomas Castellanos. The fan base had mixed feelings about Castellanos, who Florida State recruited out of high school as a running back.
With that being said, grabbing a transfer signal-caller is likely since the coaching staff saw some glimpses from the youngster Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek, but is it enough to name one of them the starter versus the Alabama Crimson Tide?
Honestly, I think acquiring a quarterback in the portal should be the move. I know that individuals have PTSD from what happened with McKenzie Milton and DJ Uiagalelei. Let's be honest: I do not think that Norvell has much time to waste playing the waiting game with either Kromenhoek or Glenn after the team had two wins in 2024. He has to win and win now.
One interesting name that I believe will at least get a look in the portal is New Mexico quarterback Devon Dampier. He completed 226 of his 390 passes for 2,768 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also added 1,166 rushing yards with 19 touchdowns.
I am not a huge fan of Dampier putting the football in harm's way. However, it is difficult to overlook his rushing ability if the play breaks down. I don't love the fact that he is 5'10", but new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has been able to be successful with a dual-threat signal-caller.
If Florida State has faded with interest in Castellanos, I would be surprised if the Seminoles decided to pursue Dampier since they have similar playing styles. However, I want Florida State to get all of the dynamic pieces to make this offense special.
