Why FSU baseball isn't No. 1 after winning series against California, RPI drops

FSU baseball (36-11, 16-8 ACC) rebounded in its Sunday rubber match against California with a 5-1 victory to win the series. FSU entered the series at No. 2 nationally and remained in the same spot afterward by most ranking services, but their RPI dropped to No. 9, although they won the series.

Ironically, California's lone win over FSU in game two boosted their RPI +13 spots. California isn't a good team and is well below .500 overall and in ACC play.

Some FSU fans wondered if FSU would jump into the No. 1 spot in the rankings after securing the win over California on Sunday. However, LSU jumped FSU after winning two of three against No. 3 Arkansas over the weekend.

When we look at quality wins, LSU has the better resume. They are 19-10 against Quad 1&2 teams, 3-1 against Quad 3, and 18-1 against Quad 4. FSU is 15-10 against Quad 1&2 teams, 6-1 against Quad 3, and 15-0 against Quad 4. LSU's overall strength of schedule is No. 25, and FSU checks in at No. 38.

Plus, their two wins over Arkansas look better than FSU's two wins over California. FSU can make a statement this weekend when they host North Carolina. The Tarheels are No. 11 in RPI after splitting two games with top-25 NC State(their third game got canceled).

FSU had three games against Virginia canceled when the shooting happened on FSU's campus a few weeks back. They are at No. 60 in RPI and would have potentially been valuable wins for the Noles.

It's semantics at the end of the day. FSU should be a top-eight seed unless they get destroyed by North Carolina and have a poor showing in the ACC Tournament. I know we've heard this before with football, but they control their destiny and should be fine if they win the series this weekend. It should be an electric atmosphere and precursor to what the Tallahassee Regional will be like.
