Why Cal Fisher's home run against Coastal Carolina was a one in a million shot for Florida State

Cal Fisher power has been non-existent this year, but this was a huge home run.

Florida State baseball needed to score runs in the worst way, as they had already been through a three-hour rain delay and trailed Coastal Carolina 1-0 in the fourth inning.

The Noles tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Nathan Cmeyla double that scored Hunter Carns, who had walked and scored from first base. Brodie Purcell sat Coastal Carolina down in order at the top of the fifth before Cal Fisher’s bat did something it hadn’t done in a long time.

Fisher crushed a 3-1 fastball for a solo home run to give the Noles a 2-1 lead as the rain began to fall again, and the umpires called the players off the field shortly afterward for another delay that ultimately forced the game to be suspended until Sunday at 11 a.m.

Fisher hitting a home run felt like a one-in-a-million shot since it was only his third one this season, and it had been a while since he hit one. However, it’s where the ball landed that makes it even more special. The ball literally hit a Coastal Carolina player in the face on the fly, shattering his glasses:

Maybe that home run will spark some confidence in Cal Fisher and the rest of the offense?

What are the odds of a home run ball hitting a visiting player in the face like that? Whew, Fisher pimped that home run quite well for someone who hasn’t hit many this year. However, talk about not keeping your head in the game. How on earth does the Coastal Carolina player have no idea the ball is on the way to his face? None of his teammates yelled heads up or anything? The guy to his left literally watched the ball come towards them and didn’t seem to say anything. Hopefully, the player is OK, but he’s lucky that ball wasn’t a couple of inches to the left to hit him squarely in the eye or face.

I asked if the weather delay would help or hurt the Noles, and it seemed to help. They responded quickly and took the lead, but it also gave Florida State pitchers Chris Knier and John Abraham another day to recover. Wes Mendes only threw 51 pitches, so he could be available if the Noles can continue to survive and advance. They need to get 12 outs to eliminate Coastal Carolina on Sunday. Here’s to hoping they can continue that momentum from Fisher’s home run.
