What is Mike Norvell's buyout at Florida State? Fans are over it and ready to move on
Mike Norvell led the Florida State Seminoles to a magical season in 2023 that ended in heartbreak when they lost their starting quarterback, Jordan Travis, to a season-ending leg injury just before the ACC title game. The Seminoles won the ACC Championship and were still undefeated, but even with all of that, they didn't make the College Football Playoff to the dismay of Norvell and the entire university.
There was a lot of talk in the offseason about Norvell and the Seminoles coming in with a chip on their shoulder and ready to prove the CFP selection committee wrong. However, with the majority of the 2023 team gone either to the transfer portal or the NFL, the Seminoles were nowhere near the same team they were last season.
Florida State started out their season on a low note, traveling all the way to Ireland to lose to Georgia Tech on a last-second field goal, and it just got worse from there. Now in Week 8, the Seminoles just lost to Duke for the first time in program history and fell to 1-6 on the season, a far cry from where they were last year.
Fans have been calling for Norvell's job for quite a few weeks, but after the loss to Duke, the cries have never been louder. However, Norvell signed a big contract that locked him in with the Seminoles till 2031 and has a big buyout, and Florida State may not be willing to pay it.
Florida State would be paying off Mike Norvell for a long time if they chose to fire him this season
If Mike Norvell were to leave Florida State at the end of the season, the university would owe him just $6 million and that number would decrease each year until 2031. However, if they chose to fire him, they would owe him a lot more. If FSU chose to let Norvell go this season, his entire buyout would be $65 million. That is the amount of money Norvell could get for winning just one game so far this season.
The only win the Seminoles have on their resume this season was against Cal, and even that was an ugly 14-9 win. Even with the ACC not being a strong conference this season, the Seminoles can't figure out what to do with the quarterback position due to injuries and just simple experience.
In the end, Florida State has to make a decision as to whether or not they want to take the chance on Norvell again or give him the boot and pay yet another coach for years to come.
