Two names to monitor on the offensive line for the Seminoles' transfer portal class
Florida State's offensive unit ranks as one of the worst in the country for the 2024 season. While I didn't think that the Seminoles could replicate the success of last year with Jordan Travis, Trey Benson, Johnny Wilson, Keon Coleman, and Jaheim Bell gone, I did predict that Florida State would be more than serviceable on offense.
Maybe I was thinking too highly of head football coach Mike Norvell's play-calling ability. However, the 2-10 record was inexcusable. That was not the standard that Florida State is used to. As a result, Norvell decided to fire multiple assistant coaches, such as Alex Atkins, Adam Fuller, Ron Dugans, and Randy Shannon (as well as Odell Haggins in a lesser capacity).
The Seminoles did a tremendous job in acquiring talented prospects for its 2025 recruiting class where they flipped individuals such as Ousmane Kromah, Jayvan Boggs, Tylon Lee, Tae'Shaun Gelsey, Shamar Arnoux, Kevin Sperry, Teriq Mallory, Jordan Scott, Sean Poret, and Brunno Reus.
The new coaching staff of Gus Malzahn, Tony White, and Terrance Knighton seem to pay dividends with recruiting. However, one point of emphasis that I want to see improvement from is the offensive line. We already saw five-star Solomon Thomas sign with LSU due to not having a position coach.
Florida State finished with two offensive line recruits in its class with four-star Mario Nash Jr. and three-star Sean Poret. The Seminoles are losing starters such as Darius Washington, Maurice Smith, and Jeremiah Byers. Not to mention the fact that they don't even have an offensive line coach yet.
The expectation is that they try to land four-star offensive tackle Chastan Brown (former UCF commit) and then try to get at least two or three offensive linemen in the portal. One target to monitor is Western Carolina transfer offensive lineman Derek Simmons, who is officially visiting the Seminoles soon.
Another prospect to monitor is UCF offensive lineman Marcellus Marshall, who was offered by Florida State today. Both are veteran offensive linemen who have played in multiple games and have experience.
Florida State needs to ensure its offensive line has adequate talent for whoever they put under center in 2025 because the Alabama Crimson Tide will be coming to town in the 2025 season opener, and they will have to contain its pass rush.
