Tommy Castellanos status vs. Wake Forest will keep FSU fans guessing all week

Coming off of a bye week, FSU is a much healthier team going into Saturday's game against Wake Forest than it's been over the past several weeks.

However, they aren't completely healthy and Mike Norvell says that Tommy Castellanos will be monitored all week and should be considered day-to-day. Meanwhile, part-time starting freshman wide receiver Jayvan Boggs will not play against the Demon Deacons.

Norvell's full comment on Castellanos' status

"We'll see how everything plays out this week and just big picture approach with guys that have dealt with injuries. We will have the availability report here towards the end of the week, but coming off the bye, Tommy probably would not have been able to play if we had to play last week, but saw some real progress towards the end of the week off, and we're trying to be real careful with him just as we went about it," Norvell said.

Castellanos has been dealing with a lot of injuries that have limited his mobility, but he's been able to play through them. He suffered a dangerous late hit in the fourth quarter against Stanford that appeared to leave him with concussion symptoms.

Who are FSU's other options at QB?

If Castellanos can't go Saturday night, the backup is true freshman Kevin Sperry. He made appearances against East Texas A&M and Kent State before playing the final minutes of the Stanford game.

Sperry is 12-of-17 for 194 yards and two touchdowns this season. He completed a 53-yard Hail Mary pass against Stanford that put the Seminoles in position to have a shot at tying the game before ultimately falling short.

As the Seminoles have fallen to 3-4 there are some fans openly wondering if Sperry should be the starter, but it doesn't seem like Mike Norvell is leaning in that direction. The FSU offense under Gus Malzahn appears to work best with a running quarterback and even a compromised Castellanos has better running ability than Sperry or Brock Glenn.

Norvell generally keeps it close to the vest in regards to injuries, so don't be surprised if Castellanos is listed as questionable in the first availability reports before his playing status is officially announced in the final availability report before the game.
