FSU FOOTBALL OFFENSE
Florida State football had one of the worst offenses in college football last season. The Seminoles struggled to move the football, where they only scored 15.2 points per game. The sad part about it is that the program could almost double the total and still be an average offense.
Head football coach Mike Norvell knew that major changes had to occur with Florida State not living up to the standard that was set, which was to compete for conference and national championships. The Seminoles decided to make changes to their coaching staff, which included hiring former UCF head football coach Gus Malzahn to be their offensive coordinator.
Honestly, I know that it had to take a lot for Coach Norvell to give the keys to the offense to Coach Malzahn. Norvell will likely be in a CEO role in the program now as it looks to get back on track.
WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM MALZAHN?
Fans know what is coming when Gus Malzahn is running the show on offense: Run the football effectively. He had success last year with veteran RJ Harvey (who is now in the NFL), but he needed to find his answer at Florida State.
The Seminoles went out and landed former four-star prospect Ousmane Kromah away from Auburn and Georgia on Early Signing Day, then picked up former Oklahoma transfer Gavin Sawchuk in the transfer portal. Those two are discussed when it comes to who will be used by Florida State in the offense.
However, individuals seem to forget about veterans Roydell Williams and Caziah Holmes, who will be returning for their redshirt senior seasons. While some dismiss the idea of either Williams or Holmes, it is reasonable to suggest that both of them could've decided to transfer out but they remain on the roster. This makes me think that they have a role in place for them.
Other backs on the roster have a role, such as Kam Davis (short yardage/third down), Sam Singleton Jr. (special teams), and Jaylin Lucas (speed and more speed). However, Williams was injured early in the season last year, and Holmes barely received any playing time in 2024.
I hope that Kromah gets a ton of playing time by the end of the year, but they might start with a veteran approach at running back with Sawchuk, Williams, and Holmes early in the season to get the former four-star prospect acclimated to the collegiate game.
