Florida State fans have been up in arms about the number of players announcing plans to enter the transfer portal. The number has risen to 20 players so far, with the latest, backup quarterback Brock Glenn, on Tuesday evening.
I’ve seen all types of comments/questions. Will FSU have enough players? Mike Norvell sucks because he’s letting all of these players enter the portal. I could go on and on.
The truth of the matter is that this is a common theme for most college football teams unless you’re in the College Football Playoff, and those teams will have some guys enter the transfer portal when they’re done.
I’d argue FSU has been fairly lucky so far, because the majority of the players who plan to enter haven’t contributed much at all, and probably wouldn’t in the future. There are only two players whom I’d want to keep out of the 20. Also, let’s not forget that FSU has 33 players to leave the program via the transfer portal after last year. Some teams have lost multiple starters via the transfer portal, and that’s not the case for FSU yet.
FSU only won five games, but the team was light-years better overall, despite the disappointing record. FSU has a huge freshman class coming, but the biggest question is whether FSU can address the immediate needs in the transfer portal. They need a quarterback, offensive linemen, edge players, some linebackers, a tight end, and defensive backs.
If they can target the right types of players, we’ve seen what the transfer portal can do; just look at the 2022-23 seasons. The hope is that’s the case, while the incoming freshmen and other young players have an opportunity to develop for 2027 and beyond.
