Florida State football will be under immense pressure to be successful during the 2025 season. The Seminoles are in this territory after they did the unthinkable and finished with a 2-10 record.
The talk of the offseason was the acquisition of former UCF and Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos and the reunion with offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who used to be his head football coach with the Knights.
This seemed like a match made in Heaven. However, when head football coach Mike Norvell spoke to the media, he barely mentioned Castellanos. Is this a bad sign? No.
Florida State football fans are in panic mode at the quarterback position since transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei did not work out as expected last year. Some individuals even think that Norvell isn't a good head football coach and has benefitted from the former do-it-all signal-caller Jordan Travis.
While I cannot confirm or deny that notion, this is the perfect time for the head football coach to take the bad taste out of a fan base that is starving for success again. The offense cannot be bad again in 2025.
One name that he has constantly mentioned throughout the spring practices is former four-star quarterback Kevin Sperry from the 2025 recruiting cycle. The true freshman was thought to be a fall back option after Luke Kromenhoek transferred out and enrolled at Mississippi State.
Many individuals thought that Brock Glenn's return to the roster was a total surprise. When he did, it was assumed that Sperry would learn under Castellanos and Glenn for the 2025 season.
The true freshman was solid during his senior season at Guyer High School in Texas where he recorded 2,523 passing yards with 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions. One of the more surprising aspects is that he has been a rushing threat. This isn't uncommon for him because he created plays with his legs in high school too where he had 1,156 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
I am not suggesting that Coach Norvell start the true freshman because there is so much riding on this season. If you start Sperry, he better be Jameis Winston tier of a signal-caller (even Winston was a redshirt freshman when he started with the Seminoles).
Nonetheless, I love the way that the youngster is getting some recognition this early in spring practice.
