FSU FOOTBALL SEASON OPENER

Florida State football is now seven Saturdays away from the Seminoles' 2025 season opener versus Alabama. The game will be televised Saturday, August 30th, on ABC at 3:30 PM EST in the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium.

Even though College Gameday won't be in Tallahassee for the game (Lee Corso's family thought it was logical for his final appearance on the show to be there instead), the pressure is still at an all-time high for head football coach Mike Norvell, who will be entering his sixth season with the Seminoles.

WR LAWAYNE MCCOY

In honor of it being seven weeks away from the season opener, I decided to discuss someone who wears the No. 7 jersey number. Sophomore wide receiver Lawayne McCoy had a minimal true freshman campaign in 2024 (who didn't?) where he recorded six receptions for 52 yards. The WR3 spot is up in the air this year. Will the Miami, Florida, native take hold of the responsibility?

LB STEFON THOMPSON

The linebacker position already had some productive pieces, such as Omar Graham Jr., Blake Nichelson, and Justin Cryer. The Seminoles went out and decided to add Elijah Herring, Stefon Thompson, and Caleb LaVallee via the transfer portal. While Herring gets the attention from the fanbase, Thompson has familiarity with defensive coordinator Tony White's scheme. He has recorded 199 tackles (20 for loss), four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in his college career.

THOUGHTS

These are two players that the Seminoles will need to count on in 2025 if they want to be successful on the gridiron. I believe that the former Nebraska and Syracuse transfer Stefon Thompson will have more of an impact this season, considering that he will get more snaps on defense than Lawayne McCoy will on offense.
