Florida State football had an up-and-down offensive output during the 2025 season. Some fans criticized the Seminoles' selection of running backs that the coaching staff decided to use. Head football coach Mike Norvell will be tasked with play-calling for the offense, which still emphasizes running the football.
They started the year with veteran transfer Gavin Sawchuk, then navigated to a newcomer Ousmane Kromah. Just when you thought that was enough, they brought in redshirt sophomore Samuel Singleton Jr. in spurts and even had longtime veteran Caziah Holmes in on a couple of questionable goal-line tosses.
Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn unexpectedly retired this offseason, and running backs coach David Johnson navigated over to coach the Arkansas Razorbacks. This led the Seminoles to hire position coach Kam Martin, who has produced several 1,000+ yard rushers.
The speed of running back Samuel Singleton Jr. can be useful for the Seminoles' offense in 2026
With the addition of Coach Martin to the staff, it was understood that he didn't recruit any of the returning pieces to the roster. As a result, it is typical for position coaches to bring in players who could elevate the room.
Florida State brought in Texas running back Tre Wisner via the transfer portal this offseason. Fans penciled in Wisner as the potential starter because of his having 1,064 yards and five touchdowns in 2024 (according to ESPN Stats and Information).
The Seminoles wouldn't have wasted resources on the talented running back transfer if he wasn't used in the offense for the 2026 season. However, I wouldn't count out redshirt junior Samuel Singleton Jr. from having an opportunity to get meaningful reps.
He showed off his impressive speed in a variety of contests in 2026. Singleton Jr. had four games of 50+ rushing yards in the seven contests that he played in. He was a factor in helping the Seminoles secure conference victories over Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.
The former four-star prospect is entering his redshirt junior season and was awarded the No. 3 jersey. The offense could always use Singleton Jr's speed to move the chains offensively. While the back isn't much of a receiving option with only one catch for 16 yards, he can still be useful on first and second down.
