Three-star this, three-star that; Florida State fans miss the days when they were swinging in the blue-chip waters. Mike Norvell’s lackadaisical recruiting approach and Mike Alford’s bad bet on the direction of the NIL era have relegated the Seminoles to the kiddie pool. Still, every once in a while, it seems this staff is brave enough to dive into the deep end, and on Wednesday, they pulled out a big fish, four-star defensive tackle Sam LeJeune.
The Mississippi native is ranked No. 119 overall by 247Sports Composite and No. 11 among defensive linemen in 2027. He immediately jumps to the top of Florida State’s 2027 class as the highest-ranked commit, though he could be usurped with top-100 safety Ta’Shawn Poole set to announce his commitment tomorrow.

Sam LeJeune is the blue-chip commit Mike Norvell can build his 2027 class around
Oftentimes, the centerpiece of a recruiting class is the quarterback. Florida State does have one committed, three-star Logan Flaherty, but as the No. 753-ranked player in the country, his commitment isn’t one that Florida State can necessarily recruit on. Flaherty has done his part in helping to build out the class, and skill position players haven’t been the issue, but LeJeune is the piece FSU has been desperately missing.
LeJeune officially visited Tallahassee on June 12, and since that trip, there have been multiple predictions logged for him to commit to the Seminoles. He’s been a longtime target of the FSU coaching staff, including defensive line coach Terrance Knighton, and he chose FSU over Auburn, Cal and Washington.
The pickup is the first major recruiting win for Knighton this cycle, though newly-hired EDGE coach Nick Williams has had some success with the additions of Anthony Cavallaro and Jaxon Holly. Like Cavallaro, Holly, and Monday’s commit, CJ Ohuabunwa, a hybrid linebacker/EDGE, Florida State is clearly prioritizing defensive linemen who are a great fit for Tony White’s 3-3-5 scheme, and that’s the case with LeJeune.
He will line up as a nose tackle for Poplarville High School, which is a useful skillset in the 3-3-5, but he’d need to put on serious weight to stick there in college. At 280 with a lightning-quick get-off, he’s perfectly suited as a penetrating three-technique and can even align head-up on a tackle with wider splits or occasionally play the EDGE on run downs. That versatility will help White continually morph the looks he gives the opposing offense, which is one of the greatest strengths of the 3-3-5.
LeJeune needs to refine his pass-rush plan, which is often the case for even the best high school prospects. But once he does, his athleticism will take over and allow him to be a force in the trenches. Holding up in the run game will be a bigger challenge, but with his incredible motor, it’s hard to imagine him not figuring that out.
Norvell and his staff, particularly the newly-hired front office led by general manager John Garrett, needed this win. It’s proof that even with a head coach on the hot seat and a lack of institutional investment, FSU still has a bit of blue-chip pull. They have to hope, though, that it’s only the first domino to fall in their favor this week.
