Well, summer is officially underway, and that means a big lull in the college sports calendar. However, while we patiently await fall to roll back around, let’s look back on some of the moments that have made FSU one of the most notable athletic programs in the nation.
While keeping up with current headlines is exciting, reliving some of the greatest moments is even better, even if some of us weren’t there to truly experience them in the first place. With that being said, here are my picks for the three greatest moments in Florida State Athletics history.
No. 3: The 1993 National Championship season that changed Florida State forever
The 1993 season delivered two milestones that changed Florida State football forever. Led by quarterback Charlie Ward, the Noles captured the program’s first-ever national championship. After entering the Orange Bowl with an 11–1 record, Florida State finished the historic campaign with an unforgettable 18–16 victory over Nebraska.
This marked the first of two national championship seasons Bobby Bowden would oversee, ultimately giving him his legendary name. Ward additionally became Florida State’s first Heisman Trophy winner. Ward was later inducted into the Seminole Hall of Fame in 1999, further cementing his place among the program's all-time greats. His championship season changed the legacy of Florida State football and helped establish the Seminoles as a national powerhouse.
No. 2: The remarkable 2025 FSU women's soccer season
While this championship run was only a continuation of the dynasty that these women created at Florida State, it was one of the most historic yet. The 2025 season featured the program’s fifth NCAA National Championship, making Florida State women’s soccer the most decorated athletic program in school history. The championship also marked the program’s second national title in just three seasons. Entering the 2026 season as defending champs, these women carry the weight of Florida State’s athletics reputation on their backs.
No. 1: “The Choke at Doak”
During rivalry week in 1994, Florida State authored one of the greatest comebacks in college football history against the Gators. Trailing 31-3 entering the fourth quarter, Florida State scored four unanswered touchdowns to forge a 31-31 tie in the era before overtime rules.
This tie set the stage for a rematch victory in the Sugar Bowl and remains a legendary story that has been passed down through the decades. I gave this moment the top spot because it represents everything that makes sports special. While wins and championships are what teams strive for, it is these moments of resilience and unity that are what make sports truly beautiful.
There are countless other moments worthy of celebration, but these stand above the rest not only for how they have shaped Florida State athletics, but also for how they have shaped the University’s reputation. I was hearing stories about “The Choke at Doak” and the legendary Charlie Ward from my mom when I was just 10 years old. The sense of community and, of course, celebration she described through those stories was one of the main reasons I wanted to attend Florida State. As cheesy as it may sound, it's not always about the final result, but the unforgettable moments like these that make sports worth playing in the first place.
