When FSU football joined the ACC in the early 90s, none of the teams in the conference were serious about football. FSU was among the elite programs nationally as an independent, and the ACC was a basketball conference always centralized around the teams on Tobacco Road. If we go forward 30 years, the latter remains true, and FSU is among the most valuable teams nationally despite a 2-10 season in 2024.
The FSU brand is so strong that they were willing to go to court on their own to sue the ACC when no other ACC teams dared challenge the ACC Grant of Rights. Clemson eventually joined the lawsuit and the teams settled with the conference by getting a clear path to exit when they wanted and the potential to earn millions more than they would have otherwise.
It has been fun to watch media members and fans of those schools eat crow. While FSU didn't have the season everyone expected last year, it's one of the few schools that can overcome poor results quickly. That's something most of these fans hate.
