WR Ja'Khi Douglas had good moments in the Seminoles' second fall scrimmage
Florida State football completed their practices in Jacksonville and was back in Tallahassee for its second fall scrimmage of the season as the Seminoles are two weeks away from kicking off their 2024 season versus the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, August 24th in Dublin, Ireland.
Head football coach Mike Norvell is confident in this team's ability to be successful in 2024. However, it is reasonable to temper expectations given the high amount of newcomers via transfers and recruits. Plus, it will be difficult to replicate what Florida State last season where they accomplished an undefeated regular season and a conference championship.
However, Florida State seems to be up to the challenge as they have started to find their stride in winning football games where they have a combined 23-4 record over the past two seasons.
Norvell feels as though the roster has competitive depth everywhere on the team. One position group that the Seminoles feel worrisome about is wide receiver. Florida State is having to replace the likes of Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman, who went to the NFL.
The Seminoles added Alabama's Malik Benson and LSU's Jalen Brown via the transfer portal. However, they will likely need other veteran pieces to step up in the rotation.
One player to monitor is redshirt senior Ja'Khi Douglas. The former four-star prospect has always shown up when the Seminoles needed him the most but he has not been the most consistent in terms of being a high-yardage contributor.
Norvell spoke about Douglas after the second spring scrimmage: "Ja'Khi had a couple of early nice plays. He scored a touchdown and had a couple of big moments. I was proud of him for how he came out."
This is encouraging to see from the veteran playmaker. Douglas will have to be a leader in the position group. While I believe that Malik Benson will be the number-one receiver, it cannot just be Benson running the show. Other pass-catchers will have to step up for transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.
