FSU football: Noles surging for five-star OL Josh Petty?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football had been somewhat quiet on the high school recruiting front. They haven't had a commitment for some time, but that's not to say the staff hasn't been working behind the scenes. The Noles have four commitments for the 2025 recruiting class, with all listed as composite blue-chip players. They have a QB, OL, LB, and DE committed, and will likely add more firepower to the list in the coming weeks. One of those could be five-star offensive lineman Josh Petty. The five-star offensive tackle ranks as the No. 29 player nationally, and the No. 5 offensive tackle. Petty received an FSU prediction from well-respected recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong Monday morning. Petty is from Roswell, GA, which is about 250 miles from Tallahassee. If Petty ultimately commits, he'll join another five-star commit in Solomon Thomas. Petty has official visits set for several places this summer, including FSU on June 21. He expects to take official visits to Auburn (June 4), Clemson (May 31), Georgia Tech (May 28), and Oregon (June 14).
FSU will likely continue to use a mixture of the transfer portal and high school recruiting in the 2025 recruiting cycle. However, offensive linemen seem to trend toward the position group that teams must develop from the high school ranks. It's rare to see a quality offensive tackle enter the transfer portal. FSU offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins has started stockpiling blue-chip offensive linemen from the high school ranks over the past few recruiting cycles. We'll likely see the first former blue-chip offensive linemen to sign with FSU football out of high school to see significant action in 2024. Jaylen Early and Julian Armella are in a position to become contributors or starters this year. Their success will go a long way in proving Alex Atkins can take players from high school and put them in positions to get to the NFL.
