The FSU football team got its 2024 fall camp underway on Wednesday morning as they begin the countdown to the season opener against Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland, a month from now. Mike Norvell spoke with the media after practice, indicated it was a good first practice, and was pleased with how things looked.

Main Takeaways

  • Returning players and guys enrolled in the spring understand the expectations and play fast. Most new players are still getting accustomed to things and learning, which is to be expected.
  • Norvell is high on the young secondary behind AZ Thomas and Fentrell Cypress. He mentioned Quindarrius Jones as someone they expect to take a big step.
  • Brock Glenn and DJ Uiagalelei played well, got through progressions, and attacked the middle of the field. The latter is something we saw more of in the 2022 season with Jordan Travis, and the offense was more efficient. One strength of Uiagalelei is attacking that area on slant routes.
  • Freshman WR Elijah Moore made a couple of plays, but it's clear he has a long way to go. I've noted several times how the transition from high school to college is difficult for guys and a very small percentage contribute in year one, especially guys who don't enroll early.
  • Transfer linebacker Cam Riley will have to learn the language and adjustments of the defense to be effective in transferring from Auburn and having multiple defensive coordinators in his time there.
  • Robert Scott had a great summer, but seems they'll try to limit him to keep him healthy while getting younger guys more reps to improve their development.

Overall, these guys look like a formidable unit right off the cuff. They are huge everywhere and check all the boxes to look like a team that can compete with the best teams nationally. It'll come down to players developing, learning their roles, and building depth.
