FSU football: Impact of 2025 blue-chip DT Kevin Wynn commitment
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU struggled to land trench monsters on the defensive side of the ball over the past few years, but that trend may come to an end with the recent addition of blue-chip defensive tackle Kevin Wynn on Monday. The Noles have only signed one blue-chip defensive tackle from the high school ranks since the 2018 recruiting class with Robert Cooper. KJ Sampson has been the lone blue-chip defensive tackle since then as the only defensive tackle from the high school ranks in the 2023 recruiting cycle. The Noles have done a solid job of developing players in that time. Malcolm Ray became a serviceable player as a former three-star recruit. Joshua Farmer has emerged as a Second Team All-ACC player and probable NFL Draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Daniel Lyons looks set to become a contributor in 2024, and KJ Sampson seems to be on the right track to contribute.
However, Kevin Wynn is the highest-rated DT commit FSU has had in the Mike Norvell era. He lists at 6'2" and 320 pounds, and plays with a mean streak, slamming players all over the field. He has great explosion at the point of attack and violent hands to shed blockers. He needs some refinement but can get on the field and contribute earlier than most defensive tackles FSU signed from the high school ranks in past years. This is huge, as the defensive tackle spot has been an area where FSU needed to improve the quality of recruits. This could attract other big-time talent. Blue-chip defensive tackle Myron Charles took an official visit to FSU with Wynn and likes FSU. Tallahassee product and blue-chip DT Jalen Wiggins is a top target and took an official visit to FSU over the weekend, though he's committed to Florida. If FSU can land at least one of those two guys remaining, it'll be the best defensive tackle class Odell Haggins has reeled in in quite some time.
