Portal Bout To Heat Up

FSU football held its Seminole Showcase over the weekend, which signals spring camp will come to a close in short order. The program will begin its transition to summer workouts soon, and a few players will have decisions to make once they have interviews with coaches. FSU is over its 85 scholarship limit and will likely look to add a few players from the transfer portal to build depth and experience in a few positions. That means some players on the roster currently will not be on the roster when the season begins in August. It's a process that's happened since the transfer portal became a thing and one reason why FSU has improved its roster so dramatically over the past few years. It's a simple question for the coaching staff. Is the player in question providing enough value to keep their roster spot, and/or can they find a better option in the transfer portal? One easy way to find transfer portal candidates is to look at the roster for older guys who have rarely contributed over the past 2-3 years. It could be someone who's battled injuries, or younger guys have already surpassed them on the depth chart. Here are some units where I expect at least one player to enter the transfer portal with spring camp about to conclude and the transfer portal window open for the next week:

  • Wide Receiver
  • Tight End
  • Offensive Line
  • Defensive Back
  • Defensive End
  • Linebacker

I won't name players out of respect, and I don't have an inside source to confirm, regardless. However, the spring game gave some insight into my thoughts. Some guys didn't appear to be difference-makers on Saturday after years in the program. I can see some young guys not getting on the field any time soon at some of these spots, and injuries probably impact a few. I wouldn't be shocked to see 8-10 more guys enter the portal. We've already seen two in Joshua Burrell and Greedy Vance. Vance committed to the University of Southern California over the weekend. Remember, if you see a guy enter the portal that surprises you, it probably didn't surprise the coaching staff or The Battle's End Collective. The two work well together to keep the players they feel they have to keep.
