FSU football: Can the Seminoles be able to force turnovers with GT QB Haynes King?
Florida State football is preparing for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Dublin, Ireland for its season opener on Saturday, August 24th. The Seminoles added several pieces this offseason via the transfer portal and recruiting ranks.
Fans will look at the 2024 version of the Seminoles and see that it is different from 2023 where it had an undefeated regular season and a conference championship. However, head football coach Mike Norvell remains confident in his team's ability to be successful.
The defensive unit for the Seminoles was one of the better collective groups in the country. However, they will have to replace pieces such as Jared Verse, Braden Fiske, Fabien Lovett Sr., Kalen DeLoach, Tatum Bethune, Renardo Green, Jarrian Jones, and Akeem Dent.
The coaching staff did add pieces this offseason such as Marvin Jones Jr., Sione Lolohea, Cam Riley, Shawn Murphy, Earl LIttle Jr. and Davonte Brown. The defensive unit returns players from last year's roster so the comfort level should be there.
Georgia Tech will be trotting out quarterback Haynes King in their season opener. The former Texas A&M transfer had an up-and-down campaign in his first season with the Yellow Jackets where he 2,842 passing yards with 27 passing touchdowns. However, the 16 interceptions is very concerning.
The Yellow Jackets ranked 124th in the FBS in interceptions known last season. Florida State only had ten interceptions forced as a defense last season. Jarrian Jones has the leader in interceptions (3). However, he is now gone to the NFL.
Defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. has always emphasized the importance of forcing turnovers to set the offense up in favorable field positions. The secondary returns pieces such as Azareye'h Thomas, Fentrell Cypress II, and Shyheim Brown, who the coaching staff has been raving about during fall camp.
I believe that the Seminoles will have success against Haynes King on Saturday afternoon as they force him to throw the football into spots that he is not comfortable with.
