FSU football: Boston College by the numbers at a glance in 2024
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football looks to remove the nasty taste of defeat from their mouths on Monday night when they welcome the Boston College Eagles to Tallahassee for the first home game of the season. FSU lost on a field goal as time expired against Georgia Tech in its season opener last week, and this will be the first game of 2024 for the Yellow Jackets. Aside from the loss to Georgia Tech, FSU shouldn't lack motivation in this game, as Boston College nearly upset the Noles as double-digit underdogs last year. Boston College has a new coaching staff but returns some players from last year's 7-6 squad, including quarterback Thomas Castellanos.
Here's how they finished the 2023 season:
- 24.8 ppg
- 28.3 ppg allowed
- 5.46 ypp
- 6.29 ypp allowed
- 4.72 ypc
- 5.29 ypc allowed
- 41.36 percent of third downs converted
- 41.56 percent third downs converted allowed
-Offensive FEI(opponent-adjusted with garbage time removed): No. 39 nationally
-Defensive FEI (opponent-adjusted with garbage time removed): No. 111 nationally
Quick Thoughts
Boston College is similar to Georgia Tech. They were in the same ballpark offensively last year, dependent on the running game and an athletic quarterback with some explosive plays downfield at times. Boston College's defense was significantly worse though. They lacked a pass rush last year and allowed over five yards per carry on the ground. It was evident last year when FSU scored 31 points through three-quarters in 2023. Boston College made it interesting in the fourth quarter, recovering a fumble for a touchdown and recovering an onside kick. Boston College will likely attempt a similar game plan as Georgia Tech, though their offensive line isn't as good, and I expect FSU to have more counters offensively with a game played already. FSU opened as -23 betting favorites and the line got hammered by Boston College bettors to move to -15.5. However, the line is up to -16.5.
