FSU football: Alabama transfer WR Malik Benson trending to FSU?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football coaches have looked to add speed to its wide receiver unit from the transfer portal. Jalen Brown, a former LSU receiver FSU recruited hard in the last recruiting cycle, joined the Noles this weekend. They could have another former SEC receiver join the program in Alabama, Malik Benson. Benson officially visited FSU over the weekend and expects to choose between FSU and Florida, according to 247's Chris Nee. Nee logged a 247 Crystal Ball Prediction for Benson to choose the Noles late Sunday night with confidence of six of 10. The wide receiver is a unit with a ton of young talent on the roster, including four excellent prospects in its 2024 recruiting class. However, they have lost their top two receiving targets Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson to the NFL Draft. I thought FSU would look to take guys with a bit more experience at the position if they went this route.
Brown didn't log any catches in 2023 with LSU, and Benson had 13 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown with Alabama in 2023. Benson is the former NO. 1 JUCO player in the country from the 2023 recruiting cycle. FSU has a track record of taking guys with little experience or production and making them household names. Johnny Wilson comes to mind as the burst on the scene in 2022 from Arizona State. He had 43 receptions for 897 yards and five touchdowns after never having more than 12 receptions in a season in two years at his prior stop. Brown has outstanding speed (10.6 in the 100 meters), but Benson has ELITE speed, running low 10.4s in the 100-meter dash in high school. He's also listed at 6'1" and 195 pounds, so he's physically ready to contribute. I could see Benson being at FSU for one year and heading to the NFL with a year similar to what Keon Coleman did in 2023. He would be a great addition to the roster, and would be a significant win over Florida on the recruiting trail.
