FSU baseball: Major takeaways from road series win against Boston College
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (26-5, 7-5 ACC) won its second consecutive ACC series by defeating Boston College 9-2 in Sunday's rubber match game. The Noles won the opener 12-4 before losing via a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning on Saturday. There's a lot I want to complain about, but when I look at things as a whole, this was an impressive series win against a team that's better than their record. Also, the weather was freezing each day and FSU had to go on the road without one of its best starting pitchers and was still in a position to sweep the series. Thanks in large part to James Tibbs, who helped carry the offense in all three games. Tibbs went 6-14 in the series with seven RBI and four doubles. He is on an absolute tear at the plate. Alex Lodise had strong games on Saturday and Sunday, going 5-10 with three RBI. Cal Fisher continues to play well, hitting the game-tying solo home run in Sunday's game before FSU begins its offensive onslaught late.
Pitching-wise, Jamie Arnold did Jamie Arnold things in game one. Conner Whittaker gave FSU five innings and an opportunity to win the game. However, the story of the series might be Carson Dorsey's start on Sunday. He went five innings, allowed three hits, struck out three batters, only allowed one earned run, and didn't walk anyone (he did hit three batters). Defensively, FSU committed three errors, and all were made by FSU pitchers. If there's one thing I want to nitpick about it's FSU's struggles with left-handed pitching on the weekends. FSU didn't didn't get its first hit against the lefty Boston College rolled out to the mound on Sunday until the fifth inning. I noted it in the Notre Dame series, and it happened against the Clemson lefty in game one, and the left-handers Louisville had last week all kept the offense in check. That's something Link Jarrett has to figure out at some point. FSU continues to waste opportunities with runners on third base and less than two outs also. Otherwise, this was a solid series win, considering it was on the road with the cold weather and missing Cam Leiter.
