FSU baseball dominates NC State Sunday to split two-game series
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (35-10, 14-9 ACC) used a big first inning and another quality start from Carson Dorsey to split its ACC series with NC State with an 8-1 win Sunday afternoon. Saturday's game was canceled due to weather. Dorsey went 5.2 innings, allowing six hits, four walks, and striking out three while allowing one earned run. He left the game in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded, but Connor Hultz got out of the jam and finished the rest of the game. A great diving play by centerfielder D'Amez Ross saved a few runs on that play to end the inning. FSU's defense flashed the leather several times Sunday. Hult went 3.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out four batters with no walks. The FSU offense got on the board first, scoring four runs on a two-run home run by Cam Smith, a fielder's choice by Daniel Cantu, and a double by Alex Lodise. The Noles added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Cal Fisher to push the lead to 5-1.
FSU added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cam Smith went 1-5 with three RBI and a run scored. James Tibbs went 1-4 with an RBI, Marco Dinges went 1-3 with a double and an RBI. Alex Lodise went 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI. FSU had eight his, five went for extra bases, and had eight walks and only four strikeouts. It was a nice rebound win for the Noles after losing a close game Friday night as Jamie Arnold had a usual rough outing. Dorsey didn't have his best stuff Sunday but was good enough to produce another quality start, which has become the norm for the lefty. The Noles will be in action Tuesday evening hosting Jacksonville before traveling to Pittsburgh next weekend for a three-game ACC series. FSU has won the first two games, 7-4 and 5-3.
