Former FSU player Greg Reid trying to recruit Alabama safety transfer Caleb Downs
FSU football has done a tremendous job this offseason with fulfilling needs on its roster for the 2024 season.
The Seminoles have made it a habit of acquiring players from Alabama Crimson Tide's roster which they secured five transfers in running back Roydell Williams, wide receiver Malik Benson, interior offensive lineman Terrence "TJ" Ferguson II, linebacker Shawn Murphy, and cornerback Earl Little II.
However, the coaching staff could be willing to make another Crimson Tide connection as freshman safety Caleb Downs has entered the transfer portal. The talented defensive back was debating whether to enter the portal or stay with Alabama.
The university hired Washington's Kalen DeBoer since legendary head football coach Nick Saban retired. Plus, his position coach (Travaris Robinson) left the Crimson Tide for the Georgia Bulldogs.
With Robinson coaching with the Bulldogs, it could be reasonable to suggest that Downs could be landing there. The former five-star prospect recorded 107 total tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 2 interceptions during the 2023 season. Florida State has to replace redshirt senior Akeem Dent in the safety position in 2024.
The Seminoles' defensive unit felt the absence of Dent when he suffered an injury. While redshirt sophomore Shyheim Brown performed well last season, it could be wise for Florida State to kick the tires on an elite talent like Downs.
Fans and even former players such as cornerback Greg Reid, who played for the Seminoles from 2009-2011, are utilizing their best recruiting pitch to bring him to Tallahassee.
I understand that linebacker is a position of need for Florida State given the state of the position. However, the Seminoles' defensive utilizes quite a bit of defensive backs in their 4-2-5 scheme. This transfer pickup of Downs could turn the defense from good to great in 2024 under the guidance of defensive coordinator Adam Fuller.
