Could Auburn veteran LB transfer Cam Riley be a take for the Seminoles?
FSU football has made a name by acquiring high-caliber talent in the transfer portal. The Seminoles have already secured 14 transfers this offseason. However, the coaching staff is still likely looking for more options to add to its roster.
Florida State is looking to create positive momentum after its undefeated regular season and an ACC championship in 2023. The Seminoles have something to prove as they look to make the new College Football Playoff that features 12 teams (hopefully this time the committee does not exclude them).
As it stands right now, the roster is almost complete. However, the fan base would like to add another addition to the linebacker room if the right fit presents itself. The Seminoles picked up Alabama redshirt sophomore linebacker transfer Shawn Murphy this offseason.
Heading into the offseason, the linebacker room was questionable given that redshirt seniors Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune exceeded their eligibilities and redshirt junior DJ Lundy decided to enter the transfer portal and commit to Colorado.
The news got better as Lundy elected to de-commit from the Buffaloes and return to the Seminoles for his senior season. Even with him returning in 2024, Florida State will likely have to rely on Omar Graham Jr., Blake Nichelson, and Justin Cryer in expanded roles.
One transfer prospect to monitor would likely be Auburn veteran linebacker Cam Riley, who recently entered the portal. Riley has recorded 120 tackles (8 for loss) and 2.5 sacks during his four-year playing career with the Tigers.
The veteran linebacker is listed at 6'5", 242 pounds, and he could be an option that could provide experienced leadership to the younger contributors. While the linebacker position is not as valued in the 4-2-5 defensive scheme, this could be at worst a low-risk-high-reward backup option. This will likely be an instance where Riley comes to the school of his choice after the spring.
