Can QB DJ Uiagalelei have a bounce-back performance versus California?
Florida State's offense has been horrific at times this season as the coaching staff thought that the Seminoles could still be a formidable unit even though contributors such as Jordan Travis, Trey Benson, Keon Coleman, Johnny Wilson, and Jaheim Bell are no longer on the roster.
The thought process was that redshirt senior quarterback DJ Uiagalelei would be able to have a solid 2024 campaign being coached by one of the better play callers in the country with head football coach Mike Norvell.
Uiagalelei has completed 56 of his 99 pass attempts (56.6%) for 666 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions through three games with the Seminoles this season. There have been discussions by the fan base about playing redshirt freshman signal-caller Brock Glenn instead of the veteran. However, the coaching staff has continued to stick with him.
It has not been like Uiagalelei's play with the Oregon State Beavers where he performed well with completing 180 of his 315 passes (57.1%) for 2,638 passing yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Ironically enough, one of his best performances with the Beavers came when Oregon State played California where he completed 19 of his 25 passes (76%) for 275 passing yards with five touchdowns and zero interceptions in their win.
Florida State fans want to see DJ Uiagalelei push the football downfield (if he plays) in this offense. It has been ugly at times for that side of the football for the Seminoles with individuals clamoring for the backup signal-caller, Brock Glenn.
If DJ Uiagalelei plays this weekend, I believe that this is his best opportunity for a bounce-back performance, even though I think it is too little, too late to have a resurgence from the veteran. Nonetheless, I am pulling for Uiagalelei and/or Glenn to pull Florida State to victory.
