NCAA selection committee did Florida State one huge solid after snubbing them

Florida State softball deserved a top-eight national seed with its head-to-head win over UCLA, ACC regular-season and Tournament victories. If the ACC sucked so badly, how did they get more NCAA at-large bids than the B1G and everyone else aside from the SEC?

Nevertheless, despite Florida State having to travel out West for a Super Regional matchup against UCLA(if the Bruins advance), the NCAA did Florida State a solid with the matchups they got in the Tallahassee Regional.

FSU will face Stetson in its first matchup. UCF and Jacksonville State round out the remainder of the bracket. Stetson and UCF are common foes in regional play, and FSU faced Jacksonville State back in 2018. While all three programs had respectable seasons, all three are good matchups for the Noles.

Florida State struggles when they face power pitching, a pitcher throwing 70+ mph. None of the teams in the Tallahassee Regional has a pitching staff that’s overpowering. In fact, no pitcher on any of those rosters averages near a strikeout per inning. That’s good news for a Florida State offense that can pour it on in favorable matchups.

Florida State should be sizeable favorites to make it back to Super Regionals.

Florida State is elite defensively, with a .985 fielding percentage, which is substantially better than the other three teams, and its pitching staff is among the best these teams will have faced all season.

The last time FSU failed to advance past the Tallahassee Regional was in 2022, when the Mississippi State Bulldogs beat them in back-to-back games. FSU has a deeper pitching staff, better defense, and significantly better offense that has struck out nearly 100 fewer times. Stetson, UCF, and Jacksonville State have solid offenses, but don’t present any challenges that the Florida State pitching staff hasn’t already seen this year.

Of course, there’s a reason why we play the games to see how it all will shake out. However, on paper, Florida State should have a great shot to make Super Regionals again.
