While most of the recruiting buzz in the summer months is generated from prospects in the upcoming class taking official visits, it’s also camp season. This weekend, Florida State hosted several prospects at its Seminole Showcase, and it proved to be an important moment for a few members of the 2028 class.Â
Mikel Morgan is currently a zero-star recruit in the 2028 class. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound edge rusher from Lake City, Florida, held just three FBS offers heading into the weekend. However, he impressed enough to land an offer on the spot from Mike Norvell’s staff, according to Zach Blostein of 247Sports.Â

After Morgan’s FSU offer came, others rolled in from Syracuse, Mississippi State, and FIU. So, he will likely get a boost from the recruiting services soon.Â
FSU offered 2028 zero-star EDGE Mikel Morgan at Seminole Showcase
While he needs to add weight to his frame to stick on the edge long-term, Morgan certainly looks to have the frame to do it. While they’re not necessarily playing football at an event like the Seminole Showcase, FSU’s staff is looking for the combination of frame and movement skills that work in Power 4 football. They seem to believe Morgan has it.Â
Who knows where Morgan will ultimately land in the 2028 rankings, and furthermore, who knows who is coaching the Seminoles by then? Still, with Norvell on a scorching hot seat entering the season, recruits like Morgan, overlooked players at the start of a fast rise up the rankings, are the type that FSU will need to land. The best way to do that is to identify them early in the process and extend and offer before the rest of the Power 4 gets wise to it.Â
It’s a risky playbook and requires a coach who had his most successful season on the back of a fantastic transfer portal haul at the beginning of the transfer boom to turn into an elite talent developer. If it says Norvell’s job, though, he’s probably up for just about anything. The problem is, though, if Morgan begins to shoot up the rankings, then even if he or another player in a similar situation commits to the Noles, FSU will be forced to match escalating bids right up to signing day.Â
Morgan’s offer is intriguing, and while he wasn’t the biggest name in Tallahassee this weekend, he could be one of the most important to monitor coming out of it, as he could begin to shoot up the industry rankings.
